To Christians arguing ‘no’ on marriage equality: the Bible is not decisive

Just in case you were wondering about claims of biblical support:

“We need to put all this in perspective. These are six verses out of more than 31,000 verses or roughly 0.016% of the text. In contrast, the Bible contains more than 2,000 verses about money (and related issues of greed, wealth, loans, and property), and more than 100 specifically on one’s obligation to care for widows.

In other words, monitoring and proscribing human (homo)sexual activity is not a particular concern of the Bible when compared to the overarching demand for justice, economic equality, and the fair treatment of foreigners and strangers. For certain Christian groups to make this the decisive Christian issue is simply a misreading of biblical values.”

SA votes: Solar Thermal or Gas? Add your voice

The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) are running a campaign to let SA Premier Jay Weatherill know that South Australians want additional power to be supplied by solar thermal with molten salt storage in Pt Augusta, not more polluting gas. Mr Weatherill is likely to make his decision by June 2017 so its important to let him know your wishes right now.

Make a quick submission to AVPMA about Roundup being found to be a potential carcinogen by the WHO

Please make a brief email submission to the APVMA Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority asking them to take notice of the World Health Organisations findings that glyphosate (Roundup) is a potential carcinogen. This is being organised by Friends of the Earth Melbourne.

Roundup is widely used for weed control around the world, especially in home gardens and by councils. It is also used on GM crops and to help non GM crops around harvest time.

From the FOE Melbourne website:

Last year the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – declared glyphosate – the main ingredient in the herbicide RoundUp – a probable carcinogen. We hoped that the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) – would intervene to protect our health. It hasn’t.

The APVMA has decided not to review its current approval for glyphosate because it claims to know better than the specialised cancer agency of the World Health Organisation. Why so? Because it has access to unpublished industry data that has never been subject to peer review and that regulators refuse to make public!

Who trusts the word of giant chemical companies over the World Health Organisation?

Monsanto has made enormous profits from virtually unrestricted use of glyphosate and now the truth has come out. Monsanto has lied to us again – and the APVMA must stop supporting an industry that is putting all of us at unnecessary risk.

Video of presentation of anti-nuclear postcards & petition to Jay Weatherill

The Australian Conservation Foundation have released a video documenting the handover of signed postcards and a petition against nuclear dumps to Premier Jay Weatherill in mid November. A group of Traditional Owners plus representatives from the ACF, the Conservation Council and Friends of the Earth met with the Premier to show him evidence that 35,000 Australians do not want a nuclear waste dump in SA.

Join AYCC at the Westpac AGM Fri 9 December

The Australian Youth Climate Coalition invite you to join them for an action outside the Westpac AGM at the Convention Centre on North Terrace at 9-10am Friday 9 December.

With Turnbull giving Adani a $1billion boost, it’s really important that we make sure out banks aren’t investing in the project, so we’re hoping to get a bit of a crowd there. Below is a bit of an outline of what the action will look like, hope to see you there!

Westpac are #climatehypocrites, and it’s time their shareholders knew it! Despite receiving awards for being “the world’s most sustainable bank”, and promising not to invest in projects that would take us over 2 degrees of global warming, Westpac has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in fossil fuels and refused to rule out investing in the Adani Carmichael coal mine in Queensland, putting our future at serious risk of dangerous global warming.

Join us for some street theatre on the morning of Westpac’s AGM, where we’ll be holding an award ceremony for the bank, with the award they really deserve, for being Australia’s biggest climate hypocrites. It’ll be a fun morning, and we’ll also be flyering and engaging with shareholders as they head into the AGM.
