Join the Australian Red Cross SA IHL Collective to mark the 72nd anniversary of the detonation of an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. We invite the community to come together to remember the victims of this attack and to highlight the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons.

After the recent historic adoption of Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Treaty, add your message of hope for a world free of nuclear weapons to our paper crane and lantern peace sign; listen to guest speakers and performers as we reflect on the need to continue to fight for an end to nuclear weapons.

Prohibit Nuclear Weapons

The world is now facing a historic opportunity to prohibit nuclear weapons.
In October last year, a majority of the world’s states at the United Nations General Assembly agreed to start negotiations of a new legally binding treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons, in line with other treaties that prohibit chemical and biological weapons, landmines and cluster munitions.

As we’ve seen with these weapons, an international prohibition has created a strong norm against their use and speed up their elimination. The negotiations began at the United Nations in New York on March 27?31, and continue on 15 June to 7 July, with the aim of concluding a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons.

National nuclear strategy meeting in Melbourne 10-11 February

All campaigners are welcome to attend the national nuclear strategy meeting in Melbourne on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 February.

South Australian representatives are attending including Adnyamathanha women campaigning against the national nuclear waste dump proposal for the Flinders Ranges. Friends of the Earth Adelaide have contributed to the travel expenses of one of the women.

The meeting will cover campaigning around all aspects of the nuclear chain and nuclear weapons proliferation, with a focus on future actions.

Saturday October 15, 2016 marks 63 years since the first atomic bomb test at Emu Junction in South Australia.

The Federal Government is pursuing plans to build a national waste dump in the Flinders Ranges while a proposal for South Australia to take the worlds international high level nuclear waste continues to be progressed by the SA state government.

Communities across the state are saying ‘no way’.

We can do better than to take the worlds worst waste’.
