Learn theory, legal issues, codes of conduct, role play and planning an action.

Video of presentation of anti-nuclear postcards & petition to Jay Weatherill

The Australian Conservation Foundation have released a video documenting the handover of signed postcards and a petition against nuclear dumps to Premier Jay Weatherill in mid November. A group of Traditional Owners plus representatives from the ACF, the Conservation Council and Friends of the Earth met with the Premier to show him evidence that 35,000 Australians do not want a nuclear waste dump in SA.

Nuclear update – November 2016

Its been an exciting two weeks since the nuclear Citizen’s jury handed their report to the Premier:  two thirds of them did not want SA to pursue an international waste dump under any circumstances; based on concerns around its economic feasibility, lack of trust in the government, and the wishes of Traditional Owners.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall has confirmed that the Liberal party will not support a nuclear waste dump and will not support a change in legislation to allow the government to continue pursuing the idea. The Opposition wants it to be an election issue in March 2018.

Despite this, Premier Weatherill says the government will still keep pursuing the project, though he acknowledges that it will not be possible to implement without bipartisan support. He says there should be a referendum with a final veto by Traditional Owners, but as he will need the Liberal party to support a referendum so its unclear how this will proceed.

Invitation to Defend Renewables meeting 22 Nov

Victoria’s Yes2Renewables campaign is expanding to South Australia and you are invited to be part of it. Individuals and renewables campaign groups such as Friends of the Earth Adelaide’s Clean Futures Collective, Solar Citizens, Climate Emergency Action Network, and Australian Youth Climate Coalition are joining together to defend renewables in SA.

RENEWABLE ENERGY IS UNDER ATTACK!

South Australia is a renewable energy success story. The state is fast approaching 50% renewables and has booming solar, energy storage, and wind power sectors.

This success has made South Australia public enemy #1 for the fossil fuel lobby, who will do anything to stop our transition to 100% renewables.

In July, the fossil fuel lobby and their boosters in the media blamed renewable energy for price spikes caused by big coal and gas copanies gaming the market. And in September they blamed a blackout on renewables rather than the obvious cause: a one-in-fifty-year storm.

The fossil fuel lobby is prepared to sacrifice South Australian jobs, investment in regional communities, and our climate to protect their own interests.

In Novermber, community members met up at The Joinery in Adelaide to kick off a grassroots campaign to defend South Australia’s renewable energy leadeship.

We’re fired up and ready for action, but we’re going to need a hand… Will you join us at the next meeting of the Yes 2 Renewables Adelaide action group?

You’ll meet fellow community members who want to rollout renewables. Snacks and beverages will be available. And no prior knowledge is needed.

Important: Talk to your MP about nuclear waste dumps

One of the most important things you can do to prevent nuclear waste dumps in SA is to talk to your MP. MPs are saying their constituents are not contacting them opposing the dump proposals and silence is either seen as consent, or that its not a big issue for constituents.

You don’t need to be an expert, just talk to your MP about your own perspective and speak from the heart. Its a good idea to ask them for their position and opinion and which way they would vote. Its particularly important to speak up about the international dump during October and November.

State MPs

Talk to them about your opposition to SA becoming the world’s nuclear waste dump. Let them know your environmental concerns, worker and public safety concerns, future generations, lack of respect for Traditional Owners and transport and terrorism risks. Tell them you want to keep the legislation that currently bans nuclear waste dumps.

Federal MPs

Talk to them about the federal government’s plan to put a waste dump at Wallerbedina, near Barndioota, near Hawker in the Flinders Ranges.
Talk to them about the need to keep federal legislation that bans the establishment of nuclear waste dumps in Australia. Ask them how they would vote if a bill to change the legislation was introduced.
If your MP is Labor, ask them to keep strong to the Labor platform of banning nuclear waste dumps and ask them how they would vote if a proposal to overturn the ban were introduced.
